Getting Started

Creating Your First Page

1. Click the "New" button in the sidebar
2. Select "Document" from the dropdown
3. Start typing to create content
4. Use slash commands (/) to insert blocks

Using AI Features

1. Select any text in your document
2. Click the AI button that appears
3. Choose an action: Improve, Simplify, Expand, Fix, or Summarize
4. The AI will generate a suggestion you can accept or reject

Creating Links Between Pages

1. Type [[ to start a link
2. Start typing a page name
3. Select from the autocomplete menu or create a new page
4. Press Enter to insert the link

Voice Capture (Mobile)

1. Open the mobile app
2. Tap the microphone icon
3. Speak your note
4. Tap stop when finished
5. Your voice will be transcribed to text automatically

Common Questions

Is Kindred free?

Yes, Kindred is currently free to use. We may introduce optional paid features in the future, but core functionality will remain free.

How does offline mode work?

Kindred stores your data locally on your device using IndexedDB. When you're offline:

• You can read and edit all your pages
• Changes are saved locally
• When you reconnect, changes sync automatically
• Conflicts are resolved using CRDTs (you won't lose work)

What AI models does Kindred use?

Kindred supports multiple AI providers:

• Claude (Anthropic) - Primary, best quality
• GPT-4 (OpenAI) - Alternative
• Gemini (Google) - Alternative

You can choose your preferred model in Settings. If your primary choice is unavailable, Kindred automatically falls back to another model.

Does Kindred use my data to train AI models?

No. Your content is only used to generate responses when you explicitly request AI features. We do not use your content to train models.

Can I export my data?

Yes! You can export your pages in multiple formats:

• JSON - Complete data export with all metadata
• Markdown - Plain text format compatible with other note apps
• HTML - For viewing in browsers or importing elsewhere

Export options are available in Settings → Data Export.

How do I delete my account?

1. Go to Settings → Account
2. Click "Delete Account"
3. Confirm deletion
4. All your data will be permanently deleted within 30 days

Note: We recommend exporting your data before deletion. This action cannot be undone.

How do I invite team members?

1. Click your workspace name in the sidebar
2. Select "Invite Members"
3. Enter email addresses
4. Choose permission level (view, edit, admin)
5. Send invitations

What are Supertags?

Supertags are flexible property systems that let you add custom fields to pages. Think of them like database columns:

• Text fields - Short text, long text
• Number fields - Integer, decimal
• Date fields - Single date, date range
• Select fields - Single choice, multiple choice
• Relation fields - Link to other pages

Example: Create a "Project" Supertag with Status, Priority, Due Date, and Owner fields. Then apply it to relevant pages to track projects.

How does real-time collaboration work?

Kindred uses Yjs and CRDTs (Conflict-free Replicated Data Types) for collaboration:

• Multiple people can edit the same page simultaneously
• Changes appear in real-time
• No merge conflicts - the system automatically resolves edits
• Works offline - syncs when reconnected

Troubleshooting

AI features not working

If AI features aren't responding:

1. Check your internet connection
2. Verify AI features are enabled in Settings
3. Try a different AI model
4. Refresh the page
5. If issues persist, contact support

Pages not syncing

If changes aren't syncing across devices:

1. Check your internet connection on all devices
2. Refresh the page/app
3. Log out and log back in
4. Check for service status updates
5. Contact support if issues continue

App is slow or freezing

If Kindred is performing poorly:

1. Clear your browser cache (web app)
2. Restart the app (mobile)
3. Check available device storage
4. Try closing other apps/tabs
5. Update to the latest version

Voice capture not working (mobile)

If voice recording isn't working:

1. Check microphone permissions in device settings
2. Allow Kindred to access the microphone
3. Test your microphone in other apps
4. Restart the app
5. Reinstall if needed

Integrations

Connecting Slack

1. Go to Settings → Integrations
2. Click "Connect Slack"
3. Authorize Kindred in Slack
4. Choose which channels to connect
5. Now you can share pages directly to Slack

Connecting GitHub

1. Go to Settings → Integrations
2. Click "Connect GitHub"
3. Generate a Personal Access Token in GitHub
4. Paste the token in Kindred
5. Now you can embed GitHub issues and PRs in pages

Connecting Google Drive

1. Go to Settings → Integrations
2. Click "Connect Google Drive"
3. Authorize Kindred in Google
4. Choose which files to access
5. Now you can import and embed Drive files

Import from Other Apps

Importing from Obsidian

1. Export your Obsidian vault as a ZIP file
2. In Kindred, go to Settings → Import
3. Select "Obsidian"
4. Upload your ZIP file
5. Kindred will import your notes, wikilinks, and folder structure

Importing from Notion

1. Export your Notion workspace (Settings → Export All)
2. In Kindred, go to Settings → Import
3. Select "Notion"
4. Upload your export ZIP
5. Databases become Supertags, pages are converted to Kindred format

Importing from Roam Research

1. Export your Roam graph as JSON
2. In Kindred, go to Settings → Import
3. Select "Roam"
4. Upload your JSON file
5. Block references and nested structure are preserved

Privacy & Security

How is my data secured?

Kindred implements multiple security measures:

• HTTPS/TLS encryption for all data in transit
• Encrypted storage for sensitive data at rest
• Bcrypt password hashing
• Regular security audits
• API rate limiting to prevent abuse

Who can see my pages?

By default, only you can see your pages. You can control access by:

• Private: Only you
• Shared: Specific team members you invite
• Public link: Anyone with the link
• Published: Publicly discoverable (if enabled)

• Browsers: Chrome 90+, Firefox 88+, Safari 14+, Edge 90+
• JavaScript: Required
• Cookies: Required for authentication
• Storage: LocalStorage and IndexedDB for offline mode

Mobile App

• iOS: iOS 15.0 or later
• Android: Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later
• Permissions: Microphone (for voice capture), optional notifications
• Storage: Minimum 100MB free space recommended
